The story of iLOLA begins in a tea shop along the Sunshine Coast with a husband and wife team, Tim and Su-Mari, hand-blending teas for their community. Their passion for loose-leaf tea and community evident in every blend, the pair was focused on providing health and functional teas of the highest quality.
However, a challenge arose when Su-Mari and Tim noticed that many customers were struggling to find the right amount of tea to use for a brew—with an inconsistent serving, their customers weren’t getting the best possible experience.
And so, iLOLA was born. Based on a desire to combine the quality and benefits of loose-leaf tea with the convenience and consistency of a tea bag, iLOLA provides tea discs that are rich in probiotics and flavour. The 30-day binding process ensures that tea drinkers get the right serving every time and adds an extra layer of wellness to every cup.
We sat down with iLOLA co-founder Su-Mari to learn more about her experience in Stream 3 of the AccelerateIP program.
What made you decide to apply to AccelerateIP?
The decision to apply for AccelerateIP was driven by our desire to scale our IP strategy and better protect our unique innovations. We recognized that having a robust IP portfolio is crucial for the long-term success and competitiveness of iLOLA. The program offered the resources, expertise, and funding necessary to take our IP efforts to the next level.
How much experience did you have with IP before starting the program?
Before starting the program, I had a moderate level of experience with IP. We had already taken some initial steps to protect our innovations, such as securing patents and initial trademarks for our tea discs. However, our IP strategy was still in its early stages, and we were looking for ways to expand and strengthen our IP portfolio more systematically and effectively.
What was your experience with Stream 3 like?
Our experience with Stream 3 of the AccelerateIP program was incredibly positive. The application process was straightforward, and we received excellent support from the program team. The funding provided through Stream 3 was instrumental in allowing us to conduct comprehensive IP audits and secure additional patents. We also used the funding to consult with IP experts, which helped refine our IP strategy and ensure that we are well-protected as we continue to innovate.
